In the spring of 2014, I went backpacking for four months through Southeast Asia and India to film and produce a series of yoga class videos. Each episode blends regional yoga styles and techniques, with an intro for cultural context. Because who doesn’t love a bit of the Travel Channel with their workout routine?
.Episode Four : Lake Kivu, Rwanda
Having lived there the past few years, Rwanda has a special place in my heart, so I was excited to feature this beautiful place in one of my GFY videos. I laughed really hard when the guys in swan paddleboats passed in the background of the video (around the 38-minute mark), what a perfect aspect to capture. This 50-minute flow has some fun inversions and arm balances- just try to find a stabler surface than sand!

There’s something inherently idyllic about rice terraces and lazy rivers winding through tropical jungles… as I couldn’t choose between the two, I just had to film this episode in TWO locations around Ubud, Bali’s main town. I filmed the first half in a studio at Yoga Barn nestled in the rice terraces of Ubud, and then switched to a platform alongside the Ayung River- I also flip directions (the sunlight was better that way), so it’ll keep you sharp on knowing your left from your right! This class has a lot of fun transitions and several new poses I learned in the area, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

The beaches of Bali truly are paradise, so it was only fitting that I film a GFY episode here. I filmed on southern Seminyak beach, which is unique for its black sand, and absolutely loved catching the horses in the background. This vinyasa flow class is 40 minutes packed with lots of chataranga push-ups, so prepare yourself for yoga buff arms!
.
I filmed this episode on the island of Koh Tao, Thailand, but learned the style itself (Vikasa yoga) on the island of Koh Samui. I practiced at Vikasa Yoga for several days, which was about all that I could physically handle (more on that here). This class is a lovely 50-minute vinyasa flow with a focus on abdominals and hip openers. Be sure to grab some coconut curry and pad thai after class… you’ll have earned it.

Global Fusion Yoga was made possible by my friends, family, and yoga students who believed in my vision (and knew this was a good way to ensure I’d come back to the US). Check out my Kickstarter to see how it all began!
